Sometimes, Winterbourne thought that Daisy did not feel anything at all. This thought annoyed him.
"Daisy is a foolish child who doesn't have good manners," he said to himself. "People have turned their backs on her, but maybe she doesn't even think about it. Maybe she hasn't seen what people in society are doing."
At other times, Winterbourne thought differently.
"Daisy understands exactly what is happening,' he said to himself. "She just doesn't care. Is this because she knows that she's innocent? Or is it because she's a crazy young girl? Now I feel less sure that Daisy is innocent. But I still don't completely understand her. Why does she behave so badly? Do all young Americans behave like this today? Or is Daisy behaving like other people from her position in society? Does Daisy Miller always do exactly what she wishes?"
